Re: Twilight
Congrats.
Have you seen the movie yet, or are you waiting to read the books first? See, my views on Twilight are as follows: good series, but not THAT good. I honestly don't think it deserves to be called "the biggest thing since Harry Potter." I mean, midnight release party for the DVD? Hell, Harry Potter movies never even had that! I may be a little biased, because I am, first and foremost, an HP dork. But still, I know plenty of non-HPers that think this as well. Twilight has just blown up over the past year or so. It's really not as enjoyable now. I liked it better when hardly anyone knew about it, and those that did were obsessed with the WRITING and the CHARACTERS, not the actors that portray them in the movies. Seriously, most Twilight fans these days (the crazy ones, at least) are only into it because of the movie. Tsk, tsk... The way I look at it, Harry Potter has a much more loyal fan base than Twilight. Some of them are only into it because of the movies, but most of them love the books the most. Okay, my rant about comparing Twilight to HP is done...for now. XD Sorry about that, didn't mean to get so weird... ??? [center]

It's...the doughnut manatee. XD |

Re: Twilight
It is. That's what nearly everyone thinks. Anyone who has seen the movie AND read the book, anyway.

Re: Twilight
(27-03-2009 01:54 AM)Bambikins link Wrote:Congrats. Completely 100% agree with you Bambi. =] Twilight is a good series, it's fantastic actually. You'd probably guess that from the way me and Bambi and a few others used to discuss it before the film came out. And when it did, here comes this HUGE obsession that just bubbles over and suddenly EVERYONE is like 'OMG EDWARD IS HOT!" or, on MSN for example, people will quote lines such as 'and so the lion fell in love with the lamb', etc & etc in their PMs. Call me a hypocrite but it almost makes me feel nauseous. I am not really enjoying the popularity. It was much better when it was popular, but not HYPED-over like it is now. I went to my friend's house a couple of weeks ago, and she has never read any other books in her life rather than Twilight, and she used to say that the books were crap (this was before she actually read them). And now, her bedroom is littered with Twilight posters pressed all over the walls, like, completely concealing them. It was insane! I am seriously hoping it is just a temporary fad that will fade eventually. Unlike HP, which is still going strong after all these years. There's not much buzz for HP at the moment, but let's face it, not a single book or movie for two years now. You wait, when HBP hits cinemas it will gross much more than Twilight and the buzz shall regain itself. You'll see. =] For me, Breaking Dawn was a little bit of a disappointment. I actually wrote a huge essay/review about it somewhere on the forums, from just after the book was released in August. I'm too lazy to search for it, but what I do know is that it wasn't entirely positive, quite the contrast. And that was BEFORE the Twilight faze overtook the world. I think that's where my obsession with the series started deteriorating. There's little character development - we don't really get to see the characters age (quite literally in some circumstances!) like we do in HP. We got to see the trio in HP age up from little bright-faced eleven-year-olds to big mature teenagers and I really enjoy reading through that transition. Ron and Hermione's relationship, to me, is so much more fun to read than Edward and Bella's, because we get to see it move through all the stages. Enemies/mutual dislike, good friends, best friends, crushes and love. It's awesome to read that. The characters are not relatable in Twilight, either. How many of us can claim we date a Vampire? Or a Werewolf? Or flaunt that we are one in the case of the males? I know we can't all go skipping around in a pointy hat waving a magic wand either, but I still think HP deals with issues that children and teenagers can go through. Lastly, I find Bella as a main character quite... dull. She's not the most diverse character in literature, and she's too miserable. That's just my personal opinion, anyway. And I don't much like Kristen Stewart as Bella. Would have much prefferred somebody like Emily Browning, who I pictured while reading the books as Bella. Honestly, I know I've wrote an essay about this but Harry Potter, to me, is just, a hundred times superior. It has a huge, strong and very grounded fanbase who go into great depth with these books. The COSForums are a great example of that, if anyone's ever been there. I enjoy Stephenie's dreamy way of writing though, she's has a great way of writing, whereas Jo tends to go on and on a little with HP. I still prefer Jo's way of writing but both author's have their downsides. Rant over. Pat on your back if you actually read more than the first two sentences of that. =] ![]() |

I read it all! But, you know me, I could go on about it for days, as I'm sure you could too.

Awesome, I look forward to it! ![]() I enjoyed writing that Twilight/HP essay A LOT. Does anyone ever notice I like to type a lot? Haha, I have the urge to write an essay about Harry Potter in the old HP thread. I might revive that thread, just for the nostagia and to see if we can keep it going until HBP in four months! I'm on a Potter-high recently, I reread the series twice-round back in January and February. And I had a movie marathon of all five movies earlier this month. Am I allowed to bump the old HP thread as long as I have good intentions? Or should I start anew? I'm not sure what the rules are regarding bumping threads.. ![]() |
