Industrial America
After the Civil War, America was pushing westward for new grounds. The United States was emerging as an industrial, urban powerhouse in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. The economy was expanding to new grounds; cities, railroads, workers, were on the move and rising. Not only were there improvement, new immigrants started to come into America`s shore. The culture of America was changing.
America moved to the city in the decades following the Civil War. The population doubled in the turn of the 20th century; 40 million people were living in America by 1870. Also, at the same time, America`s cities doubled, more like tripled with the huge influx of people coming in from all parts of the country and with new immigrants searching for a new home and work. This was the most significant part of Industrial America; cities were growing and sprouting in the country changing Americas culture and population. In 1860, there were no cities in the US that surpassed the one million mark. By 1890, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia had past the million marks. By 1900, New York had a population of 3.5 million people, the second largest city in the world. The skyscraper was a dominant image in the new industrialized cities in America. It started as a 10 story building in Chicago in 1885. The skyscraper was made usable by the perfecting of the electric elevator.
Another factor that played big in the role of industrialization in America was the culture within the new cities. No longer were people living in the farms, people were finding a new way in how to pass time and what things to do in a big city. Sports came to be during this time that is now popular. These sports are basketball, baseball, and football. Also, the building of stadiums and recreational parks were also built. Cavernous department stores such as Macy`s in New York and Marshall Field`s in Chicago attracted urban middle-class shoppers and provided urban working-class jobs, many of them for women. This also led to mass consumerism. Many parks were built for people to leisure in such as New York`s Central Park which was built in the middle of the city and it is to this day one of the biggest parks.
Trash started to become difficult for people in cities. It wasn`t like in rural areas where you just through your scraps of trash or left overâs and let the animals eat them, in the cities, there were big apartment buildings where there were no backyards and people had to find new ways in throwing their garbage. Sanitary facilities couldn`t keep pace with the population explosion. Impure water, uncollected garbage, unwashed bodies, and droppings from animals such as birds enveloped many cities in a horrible stench. Baltimore at the time was described as smelling like a billion polecats.
